Furnace Short Cycling: 7 Causes and What to Do About Each

Written by the Northland Home Comfort team — TSSA-registered heating, cooling and hydronics contractor (FS-R-50021) serving Simcoe County and Muskoka. Updated October 2026.

Short answer: Short cycling — a furnace that starts, runs two to five minutes and shuts off, over and over — is most often caused by restricted airflow (a dirty filter or blocked vents) tripping the high-limit switch, a dirty flame sensor, a badly placed thermostat, or a furnace that is oversized for the house. Check the filter, the vents and the thermostat first. If the furnace is cycling on the burner (lights, runs briefly, shuts down) rather than on the thermostat, stop and call: that pattern can also mean a blocked exhaust or a cracked heat exchanger.

1. Dirty filter or blocked airflow

The most common cause. A clogged filter, closed registers or furniture over returns starves the furnace of air. The heat exchanger overheats, the high-limit switch shuts the burner down, the furnace cools, and it starts again. Fix: replace the filter (every 1 to 3 months in heating season), open all supply registers, clear the returns. If the cycling stops, that was it.

2. High-limit switch or blower problem

If the filter is clean and it still overheats, the blower may be running slow (failing motor or capacitor) or the limit switch itself may be failing. Fix: service call. A technician checks temperature rise across the furnace and the blower speed.

3. Dirty flame sensor

Pattern: the furnace lights, runs 5 to 10 seconds, shuts off, tries again, and after three tries locks out. The flame sensor is coated and cannot prove the flame. Fix: cleaning the sensor is a standard service item; on most furnaces it is a five-minute job for a technician. Not a DIY job on a gas appliance.

4. Thermostat location or settings

A thermostat in direct sun, next to a register, over a lamp or on an exterior wall satisfies too fast. Some smart thermostats also have a cycle-rate setting. Fix: check what is near the thermostat; have it relocated or reconfigured.

5. Blocked intake or exhaust

High-efficiency furnaces vent through PVC pipes on the sidewall. Snow drifts, ice, leaves or a bird nest block them, the pressure switch opens and the furnace shuts down mid-cycle. Fix: check the two pipes outside and clear them. If the condensate drain is frozen or plugged the same thing happens; look for water at the furnace.

6. The furnace is oversized

A furnace that is too big for the house heats it in minutes, satisfies the thermostat and shuts off. It cycled like this from day one. Fix: nothing cheap. A two-stage or modulating furnace, correctly sized, is the real fix at replacement time. See what size furnace you actually need.

7. Cracked heat exchanger or a safety lockout

Flame rollout, a tripped rollout switch, or a cracked heat exchanger can all produce short, failed cycles. A cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide into the house. Fix: stop running the furnace and call a licensed gas technician. If a CO alarm sounds, leave the house and call 911 first. A cracked exchanger will be red-tagged; see what a red tag means in Ontario.

How to tell which one you have

What you seeLikely cause
Runs 2–5 minutes, blower keeps running, then restartsOverheating: filter, airflow, limit switch
Lights for seconds, shuts off, three tries then stopsFlame sensor or ignition
Cycles every 10–15 minutes, house feels fineOversized furnace or thermostat location
Stops mid-cycle, “pressure switch” codeBlocked vent, intake or condensate
Burning smell, soot, CO alarmShut it down and call

When to call

Call if the filter and vents are clear and it is still cycling, if the furnace is locking out, if you smell gas or burning, or if the furnace is over 15 years old and doing this for the first time. No-heat calls in Simcoe County and Muskoka are answered 24/7 at 705-321-9456; the diagnostic visit is $149 plus HST and we tell you what we found before any repair.

Frequently asked questions

Is short cycling bad for a furnace?

Yes. Every start wears the igniter, blower and controls, and the furnace runs at its least efficient. Left alone, overheating-related short cycling can crack a heat exchanger.

Can a dirty filter cause a furnace to short cycle?

It is the number one cause. A clogged filter restricts airflow, the furnace overheats and the high-limit switch shuts it down. Replace the filter and check the registers before anything else.

Why does my furnace turn on and off every few minutes but the house is warm?

Usually an oversized furnace or a thermostat in a warm spot. The furnace satisfies the thermostat too quickly. A correctly sized two-stage furnace fixes it at replacement time; relocating the thermostat can help now.

How long should a furnace cycle last?

In cold weather, a properly sized furnace runs 10 to 20 minutes per cycle and cycles three to five times an hour or less. Two-stage furnaces run longer, gentler cycles on low fire.

Should I turn off a short-cycling furnace?

If it is simply overheating from a dirty filter, replace the filter and let it run. If it is locking out, smells of gas or burning, or a CO alarm has sounded, turn it off and call.
