What to Do If You Smell Gas in Your Home: A Step-by-Step Guide
If you suspect a gas leak, leave immediately. From a safe location, call 911 or Enbridge Gas at 1-866-763-5427.
1. Leave the area
Get everyone outside. Do not search for the leak or delay leaving to investigate equipment.
2. Avoid anything that could create a spark
Do not use phones, electronics or switches near the suspected leak. Do not use flames or start vehicles nearby.
3. Call from a safe location
Call 911. For an Enbridge natural-gas emergency, call 1-866-763-5427. Follow the emergency responder’s instructions.
4. Wait for clearance
Do not re-enter until emergency responders say it is safe. Do not attempt to restore service or restart equipment yourself.
5. Arrange repairs after the emergency is made safe
When the property is cleared for repair work, contact a qualified contractor about the required diagnosis and repairs. Northland can discuss the next service step at 705-321-9456.
Carbon monoxide is a separate hazard
A carbon monoxide alarm does not detect a natural gas leak. If a CO alarm sounds, leave and call 911 from outside. Do not rely on smell to judge whether carbon monoxide is present.
Read about urgent HVAC service. An online booking request is not a substitute for calling emergency responders.
